Science fiction fans can rejoice! The epic conclusion of the Space Odyssey trilogy, conceived by author Arthur C. Clarke, will air on T.V. as a mini-series on the SYFY Channel.
3001 follows the adventures of the character Frank Poole, an astronaut that dies in 2001: A Space Odyssey at the hands of the sentient computer HAL-9000. His frozen body is discovered and revived, then he’s taken to a future Earth where things are very different. Mankind colonizes other parts of the Solar System and technology has evolved to a great extent. But then the Monoliths, featured in the previous two films, begin to threaten Earth and the colonies. It’s up to Frank Poole to stop them from wiping out humanity.
The Odyssey trilogy consisted of 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010: Odyssey Two, 2061: Odyssey Three, and 3001: The Final Odyssey. Movie films for 2001 and 2010 were created, but a cinematic release for 2061 was never produced. Stanley Kubrick received high praise for his directorial vision for 2001, but he wasn’t involved in the much criticized 2010 sequel. It was originally unclear if the mini-series will include details from the 2061 novel. The network planned to broadcast the series sometime next year in 2015.
